Molecular biology is the study of DNA, proteins, nucleic acids, and other cellular molecules that carry out essential biological processes for a cell to function and maintain itself.  

In molecular biology, biology is studied at a molecular level and overlaps with other disciplines, such as genetics and biochemistry. It is the particular techniques used in molecular biology that are the origin of the field, but these techniques can also be combined with techniques and concepts of genetics and biochemistry.
